FAQs

Q: What is Psi Upsilon?
A: Psi Upsilon is one of the oldest collegiate fraternities in North America, founded in 1833. The Theta Theta Chapter at the University of Washington continues this legacy through leadership, service, and lifelong brotherhood.

Q: Do I have to live in the house to join?
A: Not at all! While living in the house offers a unique bonding experience, it's not required to become a member or to be involved in chapter life.

Q: What is recruitment like?
A: Recruitment (also called rush) is a chance to meet the brothers, come out to our events, and see if our chapter is the right fit for you. It’s low-pressure and open to all who are interested. We’re always excited to welcome new faces.

Q: How much time does being in a fraternity take?
A: Like any meaningful commitment, you get out what you put in. However, there is no required threshold of time commitment, as we understand that academics and personal well-being always come first.

Q: I heard joining a fraternity is expensive...
A: Actually, joining a fraternity will save you a lot of money over 4 years! Dues help cover things like social events, food and chef costs, house maintenance, and national organization fees. We’re transparent about costs and offer payment plans to make membership accessible. The standard pricing is $3,600 per quarter, which covers our food plan, social fee, and live-in fee. Please note that you won't have to purchase a UW meal plan by living in, making our costs significantly cheaper than average Room and Board costs at UW Seattle.

Q: Is Greek life only about social events?
A: Not at all. While we do host social events, our chapter places strong emphasis on academic support, service, leadership, and brotherhood. The social side is just one piece of the puzzle.

Q: Will I be forced to drink or do anything against his will?

A: Absolutely not. Hazing is against our values and we do not believe that it will or can achieve anything substantive that will make you a better brother after you initiate.

Q: Will joining a fraternity harm my grades?

A: No! On the contrary, joining a fraternity has statistically been proven to improve your grades! This is due to our strong academic support system between brothers and other related resources that assist with learning.

Q: Joining a fraternity sounds like a lot of time...

A: Everything worthwhile will take up time! Studies have found college students involved in greek life are more likely to graduate and they report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Your time management skills will be greatly improved after you join!

Q: What will I get out of being a brother at Psi Upsilon?

A: More than you would think! Professional connections, social networks, academic support, athletic opportunities, scholarships, leadership experience, and travel opportunities all await! Being at Psi Upsilon teaches you things that cannot be learnt from a classroom, but experienced in real life. One thing is for certain, it will set you up for the future more than you would expect.
